UU Veatch Program Blog

Dear Members of UUCSR: 

Veatch grantees, and our over 60-year legacy of funding racial, economic and gender justice in this country, have never been more important toward building the better world we so desperately need — and that we know, through our values, to be possible.

In just one example of why our long term, core support is so impactful:  in early December, with all eyes on the state of Georgia, The New York Times featured on its front page, longtime Veatch grantee Deborah Scott, founder of Georgia Stand Up. The article lifts up the Black women, including Deborah, who have been educating, organizing and mobilizing to fight voter suppression in the South for well over a decade. While their efforts garnered national attention and financial support this year, the article explores how this was not always the case.   

“Foundations were not supporting social justice and community building work here,” Nse Ufot, who leads the New Georgia Project, told The Times. "No one was looking at what’s happening in our rural areas, and no one’s looking at the small ways that people were being cheated out of their own democracy by having these voter suppression laws.”

In the article, Georgia Stand Up's founder, Deborah Scott, also  describes the difficulties she faced getting philanthropy to respond when she founded her organization in 2004.  Veatch has been providing unrestricted support to Deborah and Georgia Stand Up since 2007.   

Veatch continues to be a standard bearer in progressive philanthropy. We vision a world that trusts, invests in and leads with the power of our over 180 Veatch grantees as well as the communities and core denominational entities that they represent throughout our country.  

Over this past year, many UUCSR members have asked us how the grantees are doing. The truth is — they have  been hit hard by the pandemic, the economic fallout and the proliferation of hate that we saw in the assault on democracy in Washington on January 6.  While we are all impacted, these times have laid bare vast inequality. In response, Veatch grantee organizations have become truly life-sustaining hubs, taking on the disproportionate impact on low-income people; communities of color; marginalized women and children; immigrants and undocumented workers.  

Today, we confront a global pandemic, the truths of racial, economic and gender injustice, and the fragility of our democracy.  What we’re experiencing and bearing witness to in these times, is deep, systemic and bolstered through generations of choices our country has made, and continues to make. We have much work to do. The choices we make now, individually and institutionally, in our own resolve, and in our communities, our states, and our country —  is shaping the world of today and tomorrow.

Veatch Board of Governors Transitions, 2020

In June 2020, Carol Garbarino, our Chair for the past year, completed her service on the Veatch Board of Governors. We thank her for her leadership. We also said goodbye to long-time Veatch Governors Bill Kahn and Carol Klitzner. We are so grateful for their commitment throughout their time with the Veatch Program.  We welcomed Ron Roel to the Board in March 2020, and Janet Bendowitz, Barbara Grosmark and Diane Lombardy in June 2020.  

The Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock provides support for efforts within the religious and spiritual mission of the congregation where their purposes are best served by outside agencies acting under the Veatch Program and the congregation.
