LGBTQ+ at Shelter Rock
Here is an opportunity to meet to share joys, concerns, and the spiritual experience of living in society’s margins! We share from the perspectives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Non-binary, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Questioning peoples. We share with friends, allies, and family members who have experienced this Spiritual journey with us.
LGBTQ+ people have served a unique role in their cultures. In some times and cultures that role was honored. In other times and cultures those roles were vilified. Through the decades we have named ourselves in different ways. Denied the titles of heterosexual relationships, we valued the term, “lovers.” (Some of us still do.) Today we rejoice that we can call one another partner, spouse, wife, or husband. Each of us has a unique experience of this journey, directly or indirectly. For most of us “coming out” opened a doorway to uncharted regions of spirit and soul that we could not learn to navigate from those who birthed and reared us. For this reason, we join together to create a sacred space for such exploration Friday evenings at 6:30 pm. See the Shelter Rock calendar for topics and direct links.

We are often called “gay,” and we take that seriously. We HAVE FUN! We laugh at ourselves and others – at the absurdity of life and the curve balls it can throw our way. We use laughter and “campiness” to cope with cruelty and turn it on its edge, in much the way a martial artist deflects a lethal blow. We know how to survive and thrive and wish to share our unique wisdom and perspective with those embarking on this journey, those who need refuge, and those who seek to learn more.
We come together as partners, friends, allies, and family (both genetic and chosen). In the 1960’s and 70’s we were known as Interweave in the Unitarian Universalist Association which acted publicly to support LGBTQ+ rights, civil liberties, marriage, and ordination. Our work there and in the larger world created shifts that many of us never expected to see. We now meet together in joy and celebration as the LGBTQ+ Committee. We work closely with the Social Justice Committee to secure compassion and civil rights for others who find themselves living in the margins.
We invite you to join us for support, to fight for justice, and just to have a good time.
Sappho’s Reply
My voice rings down through thousands of years
To coil around your body and give you strength,
You who have wept in direct sunlight,
Who have hungered in invisible chains,
Tremble to the cadence of my legacy:
An army of lovers shall not fail.
