The “From 3 Perspectives” exhibit featuring artworks by Diane Bares, Shelley Holtzman, and Ilene Silberstein will be on view at the Shelter Rock Art Gallery at UUCSR from April 22–May 23, 2023. The three artists have shared studio space since 2018 at The Art Guild located at Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset, NY. They each have their own unique style and approach to painting. Diane captures the atmospheric mood of landscapes, Shelley uses a graphic approach to her bold colorful florals, and Ilene uses brush strokes to portray the light of her classical still lifes. Despite having different styles, they encourage each other’s artistic pursuits.

My work may be classified as photomontage. It uses multiple photographic images, segments of images, drawings, vectors, or clips that are fused to create a single composite image. The images may be playful, satirical, or of a more serious nature. I try to tell a story with each image. My artwork represents the human condition. It reflects how I view events and the interaction between people and the world.

My work is primarily based on photographic images. I either take the images myself or I use found/vintage or other images combined with my images. The images are often supplemented by drawings to bring the various elements into a single image.

I look for the unusual in a person or persons. It's not whether a person is fat or skinny, one color or another, or any other physical attribute. It's a special aspect of an individual which makes them appear to me to be special. It's their human quality that attracts me.

I do not have a set pattern about how an image grows. I guess it is organic in that elements of the final image change over the time I'm working on the picture. Sometimes, an entire background will change or elements will be added or deleted. The end goal is to create an image with visual interest. I may start out with some notion of the potential look of the final piece, but that often changes as the piece progresses.

My background is not in the art world. By history, I have a background in science. In particular, I earned a Ph.D. in hearing science and audiology from the City University of New York. I was a professor of hearing science in CUNY for nearly 30 years and had a private practice in audiology in the Upper East Side of Manhattan for over 30 years as well.

Ellen Hallie Schiff and her students are pleased to present their work at the Art Gallery at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset. Ellen is an abstract oil painter and teaches her method of process painting to a dedicated group of excellent artists. “Our group is mutually supportive and many cross currents are developed over conversations and feedback from each person to the work of others in the class. We are a very congenial group, all moving and searching in our own way toward creating art that is ever more authentic to each of us.”

"Colorful Inspirations" Art Exhibit is on display through October 18, 2022 in the Shelter Rock Art Gallery. All are welcome to the Artists' Reception 1-3 PM on Sunday, September 25, 2022.

2022 Katherine Criss: Fantasies in Paint & Pixels  Artist's Statement: My work is a meditation. I use the layered image to encourage viewers to look beyond the obvious, to interpret and to react to the image on multiple levels, whether I am creating a photograph or a surreal painting. I use my art as a visual form of communication, and I am most inspired by irony in life, finding sorrow in beauty and joy in tragedy. Exhibit on display through July 6, 2022.

Janet Swinburne's family found its religious home at UUSCR. Three sons attended RE school and both parents taught for a few years. John Swinburne taught World Religions and took his students to many ethnic restaurants for a direct intercultural experience of different cultures. He passed away in 2000. In 2017, Janet felt that the world was still experiencing anti-Muslim sentiment and fear due to the events of 9/11. She decided to go to Morocco with a group, thinking that the nature of a group trip would make it comfortable. That decision turned out to be a life-altering one. In this video, Janet shares some of what she experienced in Morocco in this video and in a synopsis HERE. The takeaways are many and continue to have impact on her views today. Thank you to Janet Swinburne for sharing a personal view that she hopes will enlarge your view of our African neighbors and friends.
